Neighborhood Vibe

Charming, Cute, and Comfortable - Hip Yet Unpretentious

What isn’t there to like about the Heights? It is one of the inner loop neighborhoods that everyone likes and desires, and it’s easy to see why. Shaded by trees, the neighborhood's historic architectural styles create an aura and charm unique to the area. There is plenty to do, with retail, restaurants and other entertainment establishments easily found throughout different pockets of the Heights. Its proximity to Downtown and easy access to major freeways is also a major benefit enjoyed by residents. There is also a strong sense of community in the neighborhood. Community-organized events, namely White Linen Nights held in summer, and Lights in the Heights held in winter, bring all of Houston to the Heights to join in on the festivities.

The Heights was originally founded in 1891 and is Texas' earliest planned community. Today, “the Heights” is a term used by most Houstonians to refer to Heights-proper plus a handful of nearby neighborhoods, including Norhill, Brooke Smith, Shady Acres, East Sunset Heights, Sunset Heights, Clark Pines, and Woodland Heights. Many Houstonians aren’t even aware these are all distinct neighborhoods, and colloquially most people will refer to any of these neighborhoods as “the Heights”.

Heights-proper is actually comprised of three distinct Historic Districts: Houston Heights West, Houston Heights East, and Houston Heights South. These Historic District designations were established in 2007, 2008, and 2011, respectively, with the intent to maintain the original character of each district and protect buildings with historic designations (a number of buildings in the Heights have been individually listed in the National Register of Historic Places.). All this history lends itself to the charm and character that the Heights is known for.
